Industry experts highlight that OLEDs are primarily categorized into Active-Matrix OLED (AMOLED) and Passive-Matrix OLED (PMOLED) based on drive methods, each offering distinct advantages and challenges.

PMOLED: The Compact Solution for Niche Applications  

    PMOLED utilizes a passive matrix drive system, boasting simpler manufacturing processes and structural designs. It is widely adopted in small-scale devices such as smartwatches and medical equipment displays. However, its limitations include difficulties in scaling up to larger sizes. To maintain uniform brightness, higher current per pixel is required, which accelerates device degradation. Additionally, current drive control complexities hinder its mass-market potential.

AMOLED: Powering the Large-Screen Revolution  

    In contrast, AMOLED’s active matrix drive technology enables dominance in smartphones, TVs, and other large-screen applications. Key strengths include lower power consumption, higher resolution, extended panel lifespan, and streamlined data driver design. Yet, challenges persist in its complex manufacturing processes and variability in thin-film transistor (TFT) performance.

    While AMOLED leads the premium display sector, PMOLED retains steady demand in specialized niches. With the rise of MicroLED, both technologies may face intensified competition and collaboration in redefining next-gen displays.
